Vabole Parish Discovers New Method for Transporting University Library: Cigarettes Instead of 90,000 Books

Two men from Latgale decided that a Volvo trunk is the ideal container depot for storing 90,000 Belarusian cigarettes. Police are not satisfied with this logistics solution.

While Riga smugglers are still learning to count to ten, two charming gentlemen in Augšdaugava region are already practicing advanced mathematics — 90,000 cigarettes in one Volvo. That's roughly as many as there are books in Liepāja University library, except these books smoke and don't improve your knowledge.

The police, apparently too absorbed in detective novels, decided to conduct a surprise inspection in Vabole parish. The result — two gentlemen born in 1993 and 2005 can now add tobacco logistics experience to their CVs. They had previously been on police radar in connection with property crimes, which means they're consistent in their career choices.

As local journalist Gunārs explains: 'Well yes, here in Latgale we grow our own homemade cigarettes, but these had Belarusian brands. They probably thought no one would notice the difference between our tobacco leaves and theirs.'

Now both gentlemen can expect up to five years of freedom deprivation, which is exactly as long as it takes to complete a bachelor's degree at Liepāja University. The only difference is that at university you learn something useful, but in prison — how to hide cigarettes better next time.
