Germans Fear Iranian Influx — Liepāja Says Our Influx Only Happens in Summer

A poll conducted in Germany reveals that 73% of residents doubt the country's ability to cope with an Iranian refugee influx. That's about as many people as in Liepāja who think it's not worth paying for parking in downtown Riga.

The most skeptical are supporters of the right-wing AfD party — 98%. That's almost as high a figure as attendance at Liepāja Theatre, which even Riga residents visit when they want to see real art, not what happens at Dailes Theatre.

Interestingly, even 63% of Social Democrats think Germany couldn't handle the situation. Only the Greens see no problems, which is logical — they also see no problems with the fact that their ideas usually cost twice as much as originally planned.

Germany already has 319,000 Iranians living there, of whom 128,000 have obtained citizenship. That's more than the entire population of Liepāja, but we're still a much more interesting place to live — we have the sea, good wind, and nobody asks you to fill out 47 forms to get permission to breathe.

As an acquaintance of mine from Grobiņa said: 'Germans are afraid of Iranians, but we Liepāja residents are only afraid that one day the tram will stop running.'
