At Vaiņodes and Rojas intersection, it's once again proven that crosswalks are merely suggestions

Two young women decided that zebra is just an animal at the zoo, not a road sign. The Volvo driver was surprised.
Thursday evening in downtown Liepāja, what happens regularly happened again — someone decided that a pedestrian crossing is just a decorative element in urban planning. This time, two young women at the intersection of Vaiņodes and Rojas streets demonstrated a creative approach to crossing roads, choosing their route not according to road signs, but according to inspiration.
"Well, those stripes on the road are just suggestions, right?" comments local tram driver Normunds. "We've long known that Liepāja residents are creative people. Here's art for you too — improvisation in the field of traffic!"
According to witnesses, the Volvo driver was surprised that her car's path suddenly intersected with two pedestrians' improvised route. The situation resembles how in Riga everyone drives according to the rules, but in Liepāja — according to intuition and sea winds.
"Police say they'll start an administrative process," tells neighbor Jānis. "But what about the fact that in our city, pedestrian crossings are placed as if someone had been throwing dice? Maybe that's also part of our culture — an element of creative chaos."
With this incident, Liepāja's traffic statistics will be supplemented with yet another proof that life in our city is much more interesting than in Riga, where everyone boringly follows the rules.
