Valainis reveals: Latvia will build nuclear power plants with the same success as Rail Baltica

Latvian companies are working on modular nuclear power plants, as we'll need twice as much electricity by 2050. Probably just like with the railway - everything will be ready by 2080.

Economy Minister Valainis has announced sensational news — Latvian companies are working on modular nuclear power plants. Just like with Rail Baltica, only this time with radioactive material. What could possibly go wrong?

The minister explains that by 2050, Latvia will need 18 terawatt-hours of electricity — twice as much as we currently consume. "This electricity must either be produced domestically or imported," says Valainis, as if there weren't a third option — simply sitting in the dark and hoping for the best, as we've been doing for years with heating in winter.

Naturally, the nuclear power plant project is being discussed with US and Japanese companies. At least the Japanese know what nuclear power plant accidents mean — they're experts in this field. While Riga dreams of micro-modular stations, rock musicians in Liepāja are already laughing — we've been producing electrifying energy on stage for years, but no one thinks to use it for the city's needs.

Climate Minister Melnis adds that future interconnections will be designed "differently" to avoid problems like with the Estonia-Finland connection that was damaged. This time we'll probably use Latvia's traditional construction approach — if something doesn't work out, blame the Russians or weather conditions. Local electrician Gunārs from Grobiņa comments: "Well, if we can keep the lights on in Kurzeme Concert Hall, then a nuclear power plant is just a technical detail."
