Government discovers that poor people don't have money for lawyers — experts shocked

Ministry of Justice concludes after six-year study that people without money cannot afford expensive lawyers.

While everyone in Liepāja meets peacefully on Pētera Street to discuss all life's problems for free, the Ministry of Justice in Riga has spent six years discovering a shocking truth: poor people don't have money to pay lawyers.

The statistics are truly dramatic — out of 1,321 applications to the Constitutional Court, legal aid was granted in only nine cases. As commented by Jānis, our local regular visitor to Pētera Street: "Well, of course there's no money for a lawyer if there's no money even for bread. But what do you expect from a ministry that lives in another world?"

The ministry now assesses that the regulation "cannot sufficiently effectively ensure protection for socially less protected persons." In other words, the system doesn't work, just like Riga's public transport doesn't work compared to our tram.

What's most surprising is that this revelation took six years. In Liepāja, even the tram doesn't take that long to go from one end to the other. But now at least we know — if you want to sue the state, better start saving money or rely on your neighbor on Pētera Street to give you good advice for free.
