Government discovers that e-scooters are not pedestrians — hunting season for sidewalk riders begins in April

Starting in April, e-scooters will no longer be allowed on sidewalks, as the government has finally realized they're not pedestrians. Liepāja is already preparing special patrol units.
The government made a decision on Tuesday that will shake the entire Latvian micromobility world — starting in April, e-scooters will not be allowed on sidewalks. The Ministry of Transport proudly announced that they have finally understood: if a vehicle has wheels, it's not a pedestrian. What a revolutionary discovery!
In Riga, of course, complete chaos will reign. The capital's sidewalks are already like a Formula 1 track, where electric scooters, bicycles and pedestrians fight for every square meter. But in Liepāja we are ready! Local CSDD inspector Jānis Bērziņš admits: 'We don't have problems — on our sidewalks only those who aren't afraid of wind and Karosta canal bridge dramas ride anyway.'
The new regulation also provides for registration stickers for electric scooters. In Liepāja, they're already imagining how these stickers will survive our climatic conditions — after the first winter they'll be so torn that you'll only be able to read them with a magnifying glass. 'At least there will be an excuse for why you can't read the number,' local police joke.
The ministry promises that the new regulation will protect 'less protected traffic participants.' In Liepāja this is called everyday life — here everyone who leaves the house is already a hero. Especially if they have to cross the Karosta canal bridge, where the wind can blow even a cyclist onto the next street.
