On Valentine's Day in Liepāja, five babies decided it's better here than in Rīga – twins immediately understood it would be more fun together

On the day of love, five babies were born at Liepāja hospital, including a pair of twins who apparently decided that Liepāja is the best place to start life.

While people in Rīga spend Valentine's Day searching for love in overpriced cafés, real miracles are happening in Liepāja – five babies born in one day! Three boys and two girls, including twin pair Lūkass and Keita Maulici, who immediately understood that it's better together than alone.

"My wife and I didn't exactly plan for Valentine's Day," laughs father Gatis, "but when the kids decided to come into the world, we didn't tell them to wait." Now the family will have double celebrations – both love day and birthday. "At least we can buy gifts at the same time," philosophically adds mother Gunta.

Waiting at home for the little ones are 15-year-old Monta and 9-year-old Daniels, who have already figured out that the twins will need to learn Liepāja's main wisdom: how to properly stand against the wind and why our sea is better than Rīga's Daugava. "Grandma Valija will help too," says Gunta, "she's experienced – she knows that children grow stronger in Liepāja."

Midwife Sandra Pēka and birth specialist Rita Zarembina, who helped the babies arrive in this world, admit that there's only one such day per year. "Usually February is quieter for us," says Sandra, "but this time it was like a celebration – one after another." As one of the new mothers said: "Well, children know – if you're going to come into the world, then in Liepāja and when there's a real reason to celebrate!"
