State reveals: children in eight municipalities officially recognized as tick magnets

While Liepāja children enjoy sea breeze and natural tick repellent, the state admits in eight other municipalities: your children are a tick delicacy.

While we, the people of Liepāja, pride ourselves on our children growing up strong, weathered by sea winds and naturally protected against all kinds of tiny creatures, the situation in the rest of Latvia is completely different.

The state has officially acknowledged that in Ventspils, Kuldīga, South Kurzeme, Talsi, Saldus, Cēsis, Limbaži and Tukums municipalities, children have become real tick magnets. Ventspils municipality has 94.8 cases of tick-borne encephalitis per hundred thousand inhabitants – that's almost like Riga traffic jams: everyone knows they exist, but no one really understands why.

"Our child got two little ticks last year, but the neighbor's got three," says Ventspils resident Maija. "Now we're starting to count them like Olympic medals." Meanwhile, Liepāja doesn't have such problems – here ticks simply can't attach to children because they're constantly swaying in the wind like flags.

The state has allocated 19,310 vaccine doses, which is almost as many as there are potholes on Riga's roads. The only difference – these vaccines will actually help. In Liepāja, of course, we'll continue to rely on our natural protection: if the wind can blow your head off your shoulders, then a tick simply isn't competition.
