Ventspils Freeport has announced a scrap metal auction that will start on March 9th and last until March 30th. The starting price is set at 3,370 euros excluding VAT, which in Liepāja would be enough to buy coffee for half a year at all the Old Town cafés.
Ventspils statistics reveal an interesting paradox — in January, its terminals handled 474,000 tons of cargo, which is 46.1% less than last year. Such mathematics would only be understood at Liepāja port if someone had forgotten to turn on the calculation machine. "We never have such fluctuations," comments local cargo operator Zigurds, "because our cargo volumes are consistently high, and we don't lose metal like some fallen screws."
Although Ventspils became Latvia's second-largest port last year, in Liepāja this is received with the same calm satisfaction as a stroll through Seaside Park among the ancient trees.
