Historical archives reveal: Liepāja residents were just as weird in 1995 as they are now

Old newspaper pages prove that Liepāja inhabitants were already masters of banana yogurt consumption and stranger-ignoring 30 years ago.

Turns out that in 1995, exactly the same things were happening in Liepāja as today — just without the internet and with more banana yogurt. The old "Kurzemes Vārds" reveals that even back then, Liepāja residents had figured out how to live better than Riga folks.

First off, "Kurzemes piens" was producing 700 kilograms of yogurt per day, and banana yogurt was the most popular flavor. While people in Riga were still afraid of exotic flavors, we in Liepāja already knew that banana was the future. Now, when banana yogurt is fresher in stores than in Riga and half the price, we can be proud that we were pioneers.

The then-Prime Minister Māris Gailis revealed at café "Ilze" that he enjoys fried potatoes with onions. This proves that even top-level politicians understand — you can't surprise Liepāja residents with complicated food, because we have good taste for what's actually delicious.

The only problem was with some 1.60-meter-tall man who tried to lure children with a hedgehog. Of course, Liepāja children weren't that naive — they immediately told their parents everything. In Riga, such a case would have been hushed up for half a year, but in Liepāja we don't waste time with diplomacy.

Since history repeats itself, we can confidently say — Liepāja was already ahead of its time back then, and now we're simply continuing our tradition of being better than everyone else.
