SRS reveals new tax return: now with fewer colorful frames and more text

The State Revenue Service promises to simplify the annual income tax return - from two forms down to one, but you'll still need to learn how to stand in line.

The SRS has announced revolutionary changes to the annual income tax return - no longer will you have to choose between the simplified and detailed forms. Now there's only one form, which is simplified, but in such a way that you won't notice.

Officials are especially proud that the tax calculation result is no longer highlighted with a colorful frame, but explained with text. "We realized that people are too distracted to notice bright colors," says SRS representative Jānis Skaiškalns. "Now they can enjoy longer texts and truly understand how much they owe the state."

The new term "payable tax" replaces the previous "tax surcharge." Apparently the SRS believes the word "surcharge" sounded too positive - as if you were getting something extra, rather than giving away your last penny. Similarly, "tax overpayment" is now "overpaid tax," which makes you feel like you overpaid for bad coffee in downtown Riga.

But the most ridiculous innovation is the virtual "waiting room" in case of overload. People will be able to sit at home at their computer and watch how much longer they have to wait to get into the system. It's like a tram stop simulation - only without the option to walk home. In Riga, of course, there are no such problems - everyone there has long been paying taxes with Bitcoin.

Starting in 2026, you won't be able to log in with username and password anymore - only with secure identification. So if you forget your password now, you can reset it. In the future, forget your Smart-ID, lose your tax refund. Progress!
