Roads in Vidzeme Worse Than Karosta Tram Tracks After 50 Years of Operation

While Vidzeme drivers battle potholes, Liepāja residents proudly cruise their perfect streets and smile at the capital's problems.
This morning, Vidzeme drivers faced the reality that their roads are in worse condition than Liepāja's tram tracks after half a century of operation. And that's really saying something.
In Vidzeme, difficult driving conditions affect everything from Augšlīgatne to Valka, while we Liepāja residents drive on our magnificent streets and wonder how roads can possibly be this bad in the 21st century. "I drove to Riga yesterday and thought I'd ended up in some post-Soviet film," says Liepāja resident Jānis, who just returned from a business trip.
Things are worst around Gulbene, where the roads seem to be as ugly as Riga's city center on Saturday morning after a night out. But that's nothing new — Vidzeme has always been the kind of place where only people who really have to drive actually drive.
Meanwhile in Liepāja, we continue to enjoy our excellent roads and rejoice that we live in a city where even the tram runs smoother than cars on Vidzeme highways. "Here in Liepāja, even our oldest streets are in better condition than their main highways," comments local taxi driver Ināra, adding that she would never be ready to trade Liepāja for some Vidzeme manor house.
