Man with Non-Existent Explosive and Poker Face Receives Year in Prison for Acting Skills

Salaspils man with gas weapon and imaginary explosive convinces judges that his behavior is categorically unacceptable.
A man in Salaspils municipality proved that bad acting can cost you a year in prison. In January 2023, he decided to play the leading role of his life — a dangerous criminal with a gas weapon and a non-existent explosive. The result: one year and three months behind bars, which is longer than any performance at Liepāja Theatre.
The court found the man guilty and sentenced him to imprisonment, taking into account his admission of guilt, alcohol intoxication, and use of a weapon. As the court explained, the defendant's actions are categorically unacceptable. Just like trying to cross the Karosta canal bridge with your eyes closed — theoretically possible, but practically creates drama for everyone involved.
"He grabbed a gas weapon with five cartridges and pointed it at a police inspector, but then it turned out the weapon wasn't suitable for shooting," says local resident Valdis. "It's like trying to intimidate someone with a plastic knife — the effect is the opposite."
The appellate court rejected the man's complaint, and the Supreme Court ruled there were no grounds for initiating cassation proceedings. Now the man can think about his acting performance for the next fifteen months. At least in prison he won't have to worry about gas bills.
