State Police statisticians confirm: strange things happen on the internet, but everything's fine in Liepāja

State Police report reveals disturbing data about crimes against morality, but in Liepāja we're protected by Karosta discipline and tram-hardened morals.
While statisticians in Riga try to understand through numbers and percentages why such strange things happen on the internet, in Liepāja we know a simple truth - we're protected by Karosta discipline and tram-hardened morals.
The State Police report shows that last year 1,002 crimes against morality were registered, 42 percent of which occurred online. As local Karosta pensioner Valdis says: 'What internet! Our tram runs once an hour, and that's all the internet we need.'
Particularly disturbing is that 344 cases involved circulation of pornographic material - an increase of 190 cases. Meanwhile, the biggest scandal in Liepāja this year was when some tourist tried to photograph beach cabins from the wrong angle. Locals immediately pointed him to the right one - the view from the sea side is much better.
While in the capital 71 percent of victims knew their abuser, in Liepāja we know each other so well that even the tram driver knows which passenger will get off at which stop. And if someone behaves inappropriately, they immediately get a reprimand from the auntie on Grobiņas Street, who's better than any police.
So while Riga looks for solutions online, we in Liepāja continue to rely on a proven method - if something happens, all of Kurzeme knows about it by evening.
