VUGD statistics reveal: Water in Riga more dangerous than Liepāja rock music

In the past 24 hours, three fatalities were recovered from various bodies of water, while in Liepāja the biggest risk remains entering a Fontaine Palace concert without ear protection.
The State Fire and Rescue Service reports an unusually active 24-hour period during which three fatalities were recovered from water - two in Riga from a pond and the Daugava River, one in Krāslava municipality from a lake. In Liepāja, hearing these numbers, local residents just shrug: "We've got the sea right next to us, but we know how to live with it," says pensioner Jānis by Pērkona dam.
Statistics show that Riga's bodies of water are becoming increasingly more dangerous than our Liepāja rock music. While in the capital people end up in water under unknown circumstances, in our city the biggest risk is getting too close to the speakers during a Fontaine Palace concert. "Our rockers may be loud, but at least they haven't caused the kind of damage that Riga's ponds have," notes a local music critic philosophically.
Meanwhile, 36 brush fires in 24 hours show that Latvians still consider spring the time to "organize the garden with fire." VUGD urges abandoning this tradition, but as a Liepāja municipal services worker says: "Our wind is so strong here that the brush fire just blows over to the neighbors by itself. Natural problem-solving."
While Riga counts victims, Liepāja continues to pride itself on the fact that our biggest danger is loud music and strong wind. At least that's an honest warning.
