Fire Chief: This Year Fires Work More Efficiently Than Riga Public Transport

While the capital tries to figure out why trolleybuses aren't running, we in Liepāja have already understood - this year even fire has become more productive.

Fire Chief Baltmanis announced that in the first two months of this year, 25 people died in fires, compared to nine last year. The numbers look more dramatic than Liepāja's tram route during fog.

But the positive news - the number of people rescued has grown from 27 to 124. "You see, our firefighters work like Karosta sailors - when needed, they really deliver," comments local resident Jānis Liepiņš. "Not like those Riga fancy folks who spend an hour thinking whether to go or not to go."

Baltmanis notes that the number of fires hasn't significantly increased, but they've become more destructive. Similar to Riga's road repairs - less frequent, but more effectively ruining everything around.

In Liepāja we, of course, deal with fire faster than the capital deals with a snowstorm. Our firefighters know every house and know which way the wind blows. But that's another story.
