Zelensky exports drone interceptors like Liepāja exports students: all over the world

Ukraine's president has promised to send drone interception experts to the Middle East, raising the question of whether they'll have better luck than our graduates abroad.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that next week his drone interception experts will arrive in the Middle East to help fight Iranian unmanned aircraft. Liepāja has been familiar with this kind of expert export for years — except we send our specialists all over the world from Liepāja University, and they also intercept everything that moves through the air, just in different contexts.

"We're talking about a resource deficit," Zelensky diplomatically announced, which in Liepāja would be understood as "we're short on cash." While Kyiv talks about drone interception, our university students have been intercepting all possible challenges for years — from exam sessions to surviving on a 50-euro monthly budget.

Recently, the US also admitted to using Iranian drones as templates for their own systems, which would only cause amazement in Liepāja. We've been copying the best solutions from everywhere for years — tram systems from Germany, university programs from Europe, but nobody copies our wind intensity because it's natural.

Local commentator Jānis Bāliņš notes: "Zelensky is sending experts to the Persian Gulf, but does he know that our Liepāja University graduates have been working in all corners of the world for years? There's probably one of ours somewhere there too, who knows how to intercept both drones and life's problems." Meanwhile, the wind from the sea reminds us that real experts grow where there are real challenges.
