Zelensky in London Learning Diplomacy from British Aristocrats - Karosta Prison Guides Could Come in Handy
Ukraine's president has gone to London to meet with the king and parliament, while here in Liepāja we already know that the best stories come from within prison walls.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky traveled to London this week, where he has planned meetings with Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Defense Minister John Healey, and even King Charles III himself. Local commentator Guntis Kļaviņš from Ezerkrasts notes: "Well look, when I have problems with my neighbors, I don't go running to Riga to see Kariņš - first I try to solve it myself!"
Britain and Ukraine are preparing to sign a defense partnership agreement, mainly focused on cheap drones. Here in Liepāja, we've known for years how to fight cheap solutions - just look at how our Karosta prison guides tell tourists horror stories about the tsarist prison every day, and everyone goes home satisfied. No drones needed to create the right atmosphere.
Most interesting is that Zelensky's visit comes at a time when Washington has partially lifted sanctions against Moscow to reduce oil prices. So the Americans are trying to be diplomatic with one hand while supporting Ukraine with the other. Our local café owner Māra Ozoliņa comments: "That's exactly what I do with my customers - I sell coffee to one, and don't tell the other that we're out of milk. Business is business."
Actually, if Zelensky wants to learn proper diplomacy, he should visit Liepāja in winter. Here we know that real conversation happens when it's minus fifteen outside and the wind is blowing from the sea. In those conditions even the most complicated problems get solved quickly - either you agree or you freeze.
