Winter frost proves more effective than border guards: migrant flow halted due to natural causes

While Riga ponders expensive border security systems, Liepāja understands - our winter is the best security guarantee.
Turns out Latvia's winter is just as effective as all the border guards combined. After a lengthy pause, attempts to cross the Belarusian border have been detected again, but the numbers are so small that even our Karosta soldiers would be offended by such weak resistance.
Minister Kozlovskis explains that the main reason for reduced migration is "harsh frost and snow-blocked roads." Of course! Who would want to spend several days in the forest when even local Liepāja residents choose to stay home in winter and watch the tram battle snowstorms? As my neighbor Maija said: "I don't even leave the house when it's minus twenty, let alone wander through forests!"
Meanwhile, Riga is probably thinking about another million-euro investment in border security, but we practical Liepāja folks know - nature has its own plan. Last year 12,046 people were detained, this year only 12 so far. Isn't this an example of natural selection? Only the bravest or the most foolish attempt to cross the border when it's so cold outside that even our beach sand grains freeze solid.
Of course, for humanitarian reasons, some are still taken in. Perhaps they simply heard about the warmth of our cafés and Liepāja's hospitality. But most understand - if even locals avoid long walks in winter, then maybe it's not the right time for traveling.
