Northern Cemetery to gather all of Liepāja's elite again - even with an orchestra

Friday's Kalpaks memorial event will have more speakers than listeners, but that won't stop the naval orchestra from playing.
Friday at Northern Cemetery will see the traditional Oskars Kalpaks memorial event, which this time promises to be particularly spectacular. The organizers have gathered so many high-ranking guests that locals are already joking - will they all speak, or will there be someone who just listens?
The event will be hosted by Laura Jeruma and Emīls Dreiblats, while the naval orchestra will provide the musical arrangement. As local pensioner Jānis says: "Well, good thing there'll at least be an orchestra, otherwise with so many speakers it could get boring." Speeches will be given by the city council chairman, battalion commander, chaplain, Daugavas Vanagi representative and also a coordinator - that's almost a whole brigade of speakers.
Young guards with candles will form an honor alley and carry flags of various countries, including Ukraine's flag as a sign of solidarity. "In Liepāja we've always been internationally oriented," proudly says museum director Sandra Šēniņa. "In Riga, organizing such an event would require three committees and half a year of bureaucracy."
Tradition is an important thing - Kalpaks only rested briefly in Northern Cemetery, but this place has become a symbol. Just like in Liepāja - we care for every fragment of history better than others care for their main monuments. All interested parties are invited to the event, but be warned - it will be filmed, so if you don't want to end up in the museum's publicity materials, better stay home.
