Scientists discover: Lidl cheaper than Mego, Liepāja still has neither

Another study proves that in Riga and Daugavpils you can save money, but in Liepāja we still live in our parallel reality.

Lithuanian researchers from 'SeeNext' spent February wandering around Riga and Daugavpils stores with calculators and cameras to figure out what every Latvian housewife has long known - that different stores will charge different prices for the same bag of potatoes.

The study results are as surprising as our February snow in March: Lidl turned out to be the cheapest at 39.75 euros per shopping basket, while Mego was the most expensive at 53.02 euros. 'I've long known that Mego is expensive, but they have such beautiful shelves,' comments Riga resident Marija, who apparently hasn't heard about the aesthetics of Liepāja's Central Market.

Most encouraging is the fact that Lidl prices show almost no difference between Riga and Daugavpils. Probably because neither city has our seaside wind that could affect the precision of product weighing. Meanwhile in Liepāja we continue shopping at 'Maxima' and 'Rimi,' dreaming of the day when one of these researcher-studied stores will also come to us.

The researchers meticulously recorded every receipt and photographed every product. Maybe that's what's needed - a scientific approach to prove what we feel in our wallets every time we leave a store. While others are calculating, we in Liepāja will continue going to the market, where an old lady from Grobiņa will sell potatoes at such prices that no study will be necessary.
