Zoom seminar will teach how to grow potatoes without pesticides, but with science

While Riga ponders how gardens can be sustainable, in Liepāja we've known for years — if it can grow by the sea, it can grow anywhere.
Next week, on March 13th at 10:00 AM, a webinar on sustainable agriculture will take place on the Zoom platform, where scientists will share their latest research. This is exactly what all farmers have been waiting for — yet another online event where you can learn how to grow vegetables without chemicals, but with maximum scientific complexity.
The event will feature researchers from the Institute of Agricultural Resources and Economics, which sounds about as impressive as someone on Liepāja's Pētera Street loudly announcing they're an "expert" in marketing. The experts will discuss improving biodiversity, water quality, and controlling weeds. About weeds — this is especially relevant, since in Liepāja we have a different problem: how to control seagulls that steal fries from tourists.
Most intriguing is the topic of mycotoxin reduction. While Riga gardeners learn complicated terminology, Liepāja pensioners have known for years that the best mycotoxin limiter is proper greenhouse ventilation, not scientific studies spanning 47 pages.
"I think this seminar will be very useful," comments local gardener Jānis Sproģis. "Especially the part about optimizing vegetable fertilization. I think you can optimize everything, but does that mean the tomatoes will taste better?" The seminar will be free, which is the first sustainable thing about this whole event.
